Does your child seem to live in their own little world? Maybe they struggle to make eye contact, or they get very upset when their routine changes. As a parent in Florida, you might feel worried or overwhelmed. You might be asking, "Where do I even start?"

At Sunset Behavioral Health, we want you to know one thing first: You are doing a great job.

Taking the first step toward an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis is an act of love. It is the key that opens the door to the right support. We are here to walk beside you. We offer virtual care across Florida, and we can usually see you within 48 hours. Plus, we speak your language: hablamos Español.

Here is your simple, step-by-step guide to the autism testing process.

Step 1: The First Visit and the CAST Screener

The journey begins with a conversation. We call this the initial assessment. You don't have to drive across town or sit in a crowded waiting room. We meet with you virtually through our virtual psychiatric care in Florida.

During this first visit, we talk about your child’s history. We listen to your concerns. We also use a tool called the Childhood Autism Spectrum Test (CAST) screener.

Important: Please take the Childhood Autism Spectrum Test (CAST) screener before your evaluation visit. It helps you come prepared, and it helps us use our time wisely. Use this link: https://psychology-tools.com/test/cast .

What is a CAST screener?
CAST stands for Childhood Autism Spectrum Test. It is a simple set of questions for parents. It helps us see if your child shows signs that are common in autism. It is not a final answer, but it is a very helpful "flashlight" that points us in the right direction.

If the screener shows that your child might have autism, we move to the next step right away.

Step 2: Referral for the Deep Dive (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) Testing)

The CAST screener tells us if we need to look closer. The next step is the Complete Diagnostic Evaluation.

Because we want the most accurate results for your child, we refer you to a specialized neuropsychologist or psychologist. Many insurance companies require both a Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation (CDE) and an Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS).

They perform what is called the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS).

What is ADOS?
ADOS stands for Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule. It is known as the "gold standard" for autism testing. It isn’t a scary medical test. Instead, the doctor watches how your child plays, talks, and interacts.

Tip to speed things up: Call your insurance provider before your psychiatric evaluation. Ask for a list of in-network ADOS testing centers (neuropsychologists or psychologists). Bring that list to your visit so your psychiatric provider can start the referral right away during the appointment.

The doctor might:

  • Play a game with your child.

  • Ask them to tell a story.

  • See how they react to different social situations.

This evaluation looks at the whole child. It helps the doctor understand how your child’s brain works. You can learn more about how we handle these evaluations on our ADHD and Autism FAQ page.

Step 3: Getting the Answer (Confirmation)

After the psychologist finishes the ADOS testing and the Complete Diagnostic Evaluation (CDE), they put all the pieces of the puzzle together. They look at the CAST screener results, the ADOS observations, and the history you shared.

Then, the psychologist sends the CDE and ADOS report back to your psychiatric provider at Sunset Behavioral Health. We review the results with you, finalize the diagnosis, and issue the recommended referrals your child needs to move forward.

Hearing the words "Your child has autism" can feel heavy. It is okay to feel a mix of emotions. You might feel sad, but you might also feel relieved. Finally, you have an answer.

At Sunset Behavioral Health, we see a diagnosis as a beginning, not an ending. It is the roadmap that shows us how to help your child thrive. We believe every neurodivergent child has unique strengths. Our goal is to help them shine.

Step 4: The Path Forward (ABA Therapy)

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, we don't just leave you with a piece of paper. The most important part of this process is what happens next.

For many children, the best next step is ABA Therapy.

What is ABA Therapy?
ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. Think of it like a personal coach for your child. ABA helps children learn important life skills, like:

  • How to ask for what they need.

  • How to make friends.

  • How to handle big feelings without getting overwhelmed.

We provide the referrals you need to get started with high-quality ABA therapy providers in Florida. This early intervention is the best way to help your child reach their full potential.

Common Questions About Autism Testing in Florida

We know you have questions. Here are some of the things parents ask us most often:

What is autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a difference in how the brain works. It can affect communication, learning, and social play. It can also affect routines and how a child handles change.

Every child with autism is different. Your child may have real challenges and special strengths.

Can a doctor use a medical test (like blood work or a brain scan) to diagnose autism?

No. There is no single blood test, brain scan, or lab test that can diagnose autism.

Instead, doctors look at a child’s behavior and development over time.

How do doctors start checking for autism?

It usually starts with:

  • Parent interviews about talking, playing, learning, sleep, and behavior

  • Watching behavior (how your child interacts, plays, and communicates)

This is a big part of what we do during your initial visit at Sunset Behavioral Health.

What are early checklists and questionnaires?

These are called screeners. They help decide if your child needs a closer look.

In this guide, we talk about the CAST. A screener does not give a final diagnosis, but it helps point the team in the right direction.

What is the detailed evaluation?

A detailed evaluation is usually done by a specialist and may include:

  • ADOS (the specialist watches communication, play, and interaction)

  • CDE (a full diagnostic evaluation that looks at development and functioning)

These steps help make sure the evaluation is accurate and meets insurance requirements.

Why does my child’s history matter so much?

Your child’s story matters. Doctors look for patterns in:

  • talking and language

  • play skills

  • social interaction

  • behavior and routines

Parents and caregivers are the best source for this information.

What are DSM-5 criteria?

The DSM-5 is the set of official rules clinicians use to diagnose autism. It focuses on:

  • communication and social play

  • routines and need for sameness

  • repetitive behaviors or strong interests

Who can diagnose autism?

Autism may be diagnosed by child psychologists, neuropsychologists, or psychiatric providers.

At Sunset Behavioral Health, we follow a clear workflow:

  1. We do the initial assessment and review screeners (like CAST).

  2. We refer you to a specialist for ADOS/CDE testing.

  3. The specialist sends the report back to Sunset Behavioral Health, and we finalize the diagnosis and issue the recommended referrals.

Can testing be done via telehealth?

Yes for the first steps. The history and screening can be done virtually through our telepsychiatry services.

ADOS testing is usually done in person, and we help you find the right local specialist.

What happens after a diagnosis?

You get a plan. That may include support like therapy for:

  • communication skills

  • social skills

  • emotional regulation (big feelings)

The earlier you get support, the better the outcomes can be. And even if your child is older, support can still make a huge difference.

How long is the wait for autism testing?

In many parts of Florida, waitlists can be six months or longer. We know that time is precious. That is why we offer initial assessments within 48 hours. We help you start the process immediately so your child doesn't lose valuable time.

Does insurance cover this?

Most insurance plans in Florida cover autism testing and therapy. You can check our insurances accepted page for more details.

Is it too late to get my child tested?

It is never too late! While early intervention is great, getting a diagnosis as an older child or even a teen can be life-changing. It helps them understand themselves better. We also help with teenage depression and anxiety that can sometimes happen alongside autism.

There Is a Brighter Future Ahead

An autism diagnosis doesn't change who your child is. They are still the same wonderful person they were yesterday. But now, you have the tools to help them navigate the world more easily.
